I love Oliver Jeffers’ illustrations and stories.

Katherine’s found a great interview with him in The Guardian.

not so dark

I haven’t watched any of the other episodes of Channel 4’s Christianity: A History but have just enjoyed Robert Beckford’s examination of the Dark Ages a great deal.

Its a subject I have a bit of a geeky fascination with already, and studied a bit at University. He came at it from a slightly different angle and I found his comments about the inclusivity of Anglo Saxon Christianity profound and at times moving.

I think its watch againable for a few days yet.

“

Say not the struggle naught availeth,
The labour and the wounds are vain,
The enemy faints not, nor faileth,
And as things have been they remain.

If hopes were dupes, fears may be liars;
It may be, in yon smoke conceal’d,
Your comrades chase e’en now the fliers,
And, but for you, possess the field.

For while the tired waves, vainly breaking,
Seem here no painful inch to gain,
Far back, through creeks and inlets making,
Comes silent, flooding in, the main.

And not by eastern windows only,
When daylight comes, comes in the light;
In front the sun climbs slow, how slowly!
But westward, look, the land is bright!

Say not the Struggle Naught availeth by Arthur Hugh Clough

I was flicking through a book of poetry that I was given at Christmas this morning. This one just jumped out at me. I love the sentiment.

Of course it is possible that this becomes empty optimism. There could well have been many who were roused by these words only to find they were in fact on the wrong side and that the tide of good actually flowed against them.

Perhaps its worth taking a moment to reflect about whether your side really is that of light and dawn. Once you are sure of that, maybe these words will encourage you in your struggle.
